My Journey
My journey into equine bodywork/massage began 6 years ago with my quarter horse, Naomi. Naomi was in a kill pen in Northern Colorado, one hoof on the 18 wheeler north or south, until Hope For Hooves Rescue found her. Naomi was overweight, yes, and out of shape from standing around in the kill pen. One day when I was grooming her left hindlimb, I felt a 7” long, 1” deep, 3” wide wedge shaped thick scar tissue, fibrotic muscles fibers of the hamstring. This is fibrotic myopathy, organized scar tissue that is a biomechanical restriction of her left hindlimb. Naomi doesn’t have a full hindlimb stride resulting in a gait, the left hind “slaps” down on impact with the ground, “cowboy drop foot”. Ossification of the muscle fibers feels and acts like bone. How and what this is? What can I do about this? No pain, discomfort for her, just severely affected gait, walk, trot, canter. Naomi’s massage therapist identified this and pointed me in the direction of becoming a certified Equine Body Massage Therapist.
My education through Equine Kneads Academy. Intensive equine anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and massage techniques has led me to see results in Naomi, but has also helped horses and their owners. A lifetime love of horses, a heartfelt love of Naomi, with her leading me to a career in Equine Bodywork and Massage Therapy. I “see” with my hands and listen to the horse’s body telling it’s own tale.
